Harvey Thurmer, Alexander Technique & Performance Mindset

Violinist Harvey Thurmer enjoys a varied career as a soloist, concertmaster, chamber musician and pedagogue. Prior to his appointment at Miami University, he performed extensively as a chamber musician in Europe, with appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Cheltenham Festival in England, London’s Wigmore Hall, Zurich TonHalle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Paris Salle Gavaeu, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. As a member of the Franz Schubert Quartet of Vienna, he held teaching positions at the Graz Musickhochschule and the Royal College of Music in Manchester England. He has taught at the Lappland Festival in Sweden, the Lake District Summer Music Festival in England, and the Summer Acadamy in Graz, Austria. As a member of the Oxford String Quartet, the resident string ensemble at Miami University from 1997-2005, he performed in important venues across the U.S. and in Austria, Japan, S.Korea, and South America. 

He is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and has published research on the effectiveness of the technique on muscle activation in upper string players for the Performing Arts Medical Association.  He has presented workshops throughout the U.S., the UK and Brazil on the Technique.
